La obra más influyente de la literatura española y, para muchos, una de las mejores novelas de la literatura universal, es “El Quijote”. Su título completo es “El ingenioso hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha” y la escribió Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra en el año 1605. Desde su primera edición, se convirtió en un éxito inmediato. A día de hoy, se calcula que es el libro más vendido de la historia, sin contar obras religiosas o políticas, con más de 500 millones de ejemplares.
La novela relata las aventuras de un hombre que se vuelve loco, hasta el punto de creer que es un caballero medieval. Sus sueños y alucinaciones le llevarán a protagonizar todo tipo de aventuras, en las que le acompaña su escudero Sancho Panza. Entre las curiosidades de esta obra, está su primera frase, que esconde un misterio: “en un lugar de la Mancha de cuyo nombre no quiero acordarme …”. Es decir, Cervantes no explica en qué pueblo exacto de la región española de Castilla-La Mancha se desarrolla la historia.
El episodio más popular de la novela, es la lucha contra molinos de viento, en la que Don Quijote se cree que se está enfrentando a gigantes. Esta pelea contra un enemigo mucho más poderoso, hace que en la actualidad usemos la palabra “quijote” para describir a una persona que corre a defender las causas que considera justas a pesar de las dificultades. Así pues, podemos decir que en el mundo hay muchos quijotes que, aunque estén un poco locos como el protagonista de la novela, tratan de hacer un mundo mejor.

The most influential work of Spanish literature and, for many, one of the greatest novels in world literature, is “Don Quixote.” Its full title is “The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha,” and it was written by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra in the year 1605. Since its first edition, it became an immediate success. Today, it is estimated to be the best-selling book in history, excluding religious or political works, with over 500 million copies.
The novel narrates the adventures of a man who goes mad to the point of believing he is a medieval knight. His dreams and hallucinations lead him to partake in all sorts of adventures, accompanied by his squire, Sancho Panza. Among the curiosities of this work is its first sentence, which hides a mystery: “In a village of La Mancha, the name of which I have no desire to call to mind…”. In other words, Cervantes doesn’t specify the exact town in the Spanish region of Castilla-La Mancha where the story unfolds.
The most famous episode in the novel is the battle against windmills, in which Don Quixote believes he is confronting giants. This fight against a much more powerful enemy has led us to use the term “quixote” today to describe a person who rushes to defend causes they deem just despite the odds. Therefore, we can say that there are many quixotes in the world who, although a bit crazy like the novel’s protagonist, strive to make the world a better place.
