John est américain. Il vient de Boston. Il est arrivé à Paris il y a maintenant 2 ans et il n’a pas très envie de retourner aux États-Unis. Il pense souvent à son pays, mais le style de vie français lui plaît beaucoup. En fait, il aimerait habiter en France et travailler aux États-Unis mais ça, c’est difficile…
John va souvent au cinéma, il y va une fois par semaine. Il aimerait bien y aller plus souvent mais ça coûte cher et il n’a pas beaucoup de temps à cause de son travail.
Il aime bien sortir, il voit souvent des copains le week-end et il va boire une bière avec eux. En général, ils parlent de tout et de rien, du travail, des filles, du sport, etc. Quand John va au cinéma, c’est toujours seul. Il n’aime pas être avec quelqu’un quand il voit un film. Ses amis trouvent ça plutôt étrange. Mais pour John, un peu de solitude, c’est bien. Il n’a pas besoin de dire quelque chose sur le film, par exemple “c’était génial” ou bien “j’ai bien aimé le moment où le type avance tout seul dans la nuit” etc, etc. Comme il y va seul, il peut continuer à penser au film et rêver en marchant dans les rues de Paris.
An American
John is American. He comes from Boston. He arrived in Paris two years ago, and he doesn’t really want to go back to the United States. He often thinks about his country, but he really likes the French way of life. In fact, he would like to live in France and work in the United States, but that’s difficult…
John often goes to the cinema; he goes there once a week. He would like to go more often, but it’s expensive, and he doesn’t have much time because of his job.
He enjoys going out; he often meets up with friends on the weekends and goes for a beer with them. In general, they talk about everything and nothing, work, girls, sports, and so on. When John goes to the cinema, he always goes alone. He doesn’t like to be with someone when he watches a movie. His friends find it somewhat strange. But for John, a bit of solitude is good. He doesn’t need to say anything about the movie, like “it was great” or “I liked the part where the guy walks alone in the night,” etc., etc. Since he goes alone, he can continue to think about the film and daydream while walking the streets of Paris.
