— Il existe dans le monde des sociétés multiculturelles. L’ancien Empire turc était un exemple remarquable de société multiculturelle. L’Inde même contemporaine a choisi la [société] multiculturelle.
Les États-Unis à leur manière sont des sociétés multiculturelles et il faut voir que ces sociétés multiculturelles payent leur ouverture à la diversité de quand même pas mal de ségrégations d’une part, et pas mal d’inégalités.
Chaque communauté finalement tend à se replier un peu égoïstement sur elle-même. Les sociétés qui traditionnellement étaient plutôt solidaires et plutôt égalitaires étaient des sociétés peu multiculturelles : le Japon, l’Europe du Nord, etc.
On a une bonne étude de cas en quelque sorte dans les sociétés d’Europe du Nord qui au fond ont tenté de combiner leurs principes traditionnels égalitaires, refusant la ségrégation, etc. avec l’existence d’une société multiculturelle et le respect de la différence culturelle.
Et on voit bien, ce n’est pas par hasard, que ce sont justement ces sociétés qui sont actuellement marquées par une montée d’un populisme xénophobe qui est tout de même très impressionnant qu’il s’agisse des Pays-Bas, de la Suède, du Danemark…
— L’Allemagne en partie aussi ?
— Et maintenant l’Allemagne. Les propos récents d’Angela Merkel… Au fond, Angela Merkel est la première, je dirais, le premier personnage politique réputé sérieux, enfin pas extrémiste du tout, elle n’a pas cette réputation, à prendre clairement position contre les sociétés multiculturelles.
Et quand on voit, il y a eu des sondages par exemple faits récemment en Allemagne sur la perception des étrangers, la perception de l’Islam etc. On a vraiment des résultats qui sont très impressionnants.
Multicultural societies
– There exist multicultural societies in the world. The former Turkish Empire was a remarkable example of a multicultural society. Contemporary India has also chosen a multicultural society.
The United States, in their own way, are multicultural societies, and it must be acknowledged that these multicultural societies bear the burden of both considerable segregation on one hand and significant inequalities on the other.
Ultimately, each community tends to somewhat selfishly retreat into itself. Societies that traditionally leaned towards solidarity and equality were less multicultural societies: Japan, Northern Europe, and so on.
We have a good case study in a way in the societies of Northern Europe, which, in essence, attempted to combine their traditional egalitarian principles, rejecting segregation, etc., with the existence of a multicultural society and respect for cultural differences.
And it is not by chance that precisely these societies are currently marked by a rise in xenophobic populism, which is quite impressive, whether it’s in the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark…
– Germany, to some extent, as well?
– And now Germany too. Angela Merkel’s recent statements… In essence, Angela Merkel is the first, I would say, the first reputable political figure, not at all extremist, she does not have that reputation, to clearly take a stance against multicultural societies.
And when we see recent surveys, for example, conducted in Germany regarding the perception of foreigners and the perception of Islam, we have truly impressive results.
